What is Digital Visual Monitoring Unit?

Digital Visual Monitoring Unit (DVMU) is a trainer for certain type of launching systems deployed by the defence forces. It is a microcontroller based system that monitors the activity of an operator sitting in the launching system and shows the result of his activity on an LCD display to the instructor sitting outside the launching system.

How does Digital Visual Monitoring Unit work?

Digital Visual Monitoring Unit is a pin-to-pin replacement of the dated analog based trainer. The connector that is used to power and send signals to the analog based trainer can be used as is with the DVMU.

Once the DVMU is powered up, it starts to receive signals from the launching system. Signals like track time, hold time, azimuth, elevation and many other signals are monitored by DVMU and displayed on the wide LCD screen of the system. Various timers are started which monitors the activity of the operator. When the operator sends a launch command, the timers are turned off and the performance of the operator is displayed on the LCD screen.

Along with the DVMU, we have also created server software with a database to store the result of each operator. The data collected by the DVMU can be directly transferred to the server in realtime and stored for future analysis. The performance of each operator and various other reports and analysis can be done by the DVMU server software.

What are the advantages of the DVMU over existing systems?

DVMU is a microcontroller based digital system wherease the old visual monitoring systems are analog system. The DVMU can display the result of each launch on an LCD and also store the data on a server for future use. The old visual monitoring system cannot achieve this.

Also, very importantly, the DVMU is a much lower in cost and manufactured indigenously. Thus problem of spares, repair etc. is also minimal as compared to old visual monitoring system.
