GPS (Global Positioning Sys)

GPS Communication

What is GPS (Global Positioning System)?

The Global Positioning System (GPS), is a global navigation satellite system that provides time & location information to a receiver with GPS capability anywhere on or near the Earth. A GPS receiver does not transmit data. It also does not require any Internet or telephone connection.

The satellite-based navigation system made is up of at least 24 satellites. The information provided by GPS are: position, speed, bearing, time etc.

What are the challenges in GPS based product development?

GPS as a standalone while very useful, most GPS products also require integration with maps in the GPS device, or connection to the Internet (preferrably using a Mobile network). Thus GPS devices are rarely standalone in nature. Further GPS will be useful only when the person using it is moving, most GPS devices are battery powered. Thus battery considerations are very important for GPS based product development.
