GSM (Global System for Mobile) and GPS (Global Positioning System) based design and development
If you have any requirement regarding design and development of Raspberry Pi based products, get in touch with us and we will be glad to offer our superior service to you.
What is GSM?
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile and is a technology is the backbone of the wireless cellular or telecom network that is used worldwide by mobile phones. This technology normally requires the use of a mobile phone (like Nokia, Android, Apple etc.) with a SIM card.
GSM technology permits devices to communicate with each other using SMS, phone call, GPRS data and other such similar mechanisms.
What is GSM Modem?
GSM modem is a programmable device in which a SIM is inserted in the device so that the device can communicate using GPRS, SMS or phone call etc. with other devices, machines (like servers) or humans (making a phone call and sending an SMS) etc. The GSM modem relies on the underlying cellular network for communication.
Many companies offer GSM modem. These devices are available in the form of:
OEM module from manufacturers like Simcom, Quectel, Sierra Wireless etc. Here the entire circuit board has to be built as per customer requirement with considerations like SIM insertion point, antenna, power supply requirements etc.
Complete circuit board with OEM module loaded on top of it. It normally has RS232 or RS485 interface to communicate. In this case power supply, SIM insertion, antenna etc requirements are taken care of, but typically the downside is additional cost, large form factor and not fitting seamlessly into current project requirements.
GSM Modem based product development
Since GSM technology allows long distance communication over their wireless network, GSM devices are typically used for remote sensing, remote communication, alarm generation, data logging, remote control etc.
GSM devices also typically need to interface with sensors and need to communicate via RS-232, RS-485 etc to gather data.
We have done various projects that meet these kind of requirements for our customers. If you have any requirement, please contact us.
What is GPS (Global Positioning System)?
The Global Positioning System (GPS), is a global navigation satellite system that provides time & location information to a receiver with GPS capability anywhere on or near the Earth. A GPS receiver does not transmit data. It also does not require any Internet or telephone connection.
The satellite-based navigation system made is up of at least 24 satellites. The information provided by GPS are: position, speed, bearing, time etc.
What are the challenges in GPS based product development?
GPS products mostly require integration with maps in the GPS device, or connection to the Internet (preferably using a Mobile network). Battery considerations are very important for GPS based product development. Accuracy of the GPS location and handling signal loss are other common challanges.
